Keynote: Implications of Cloud Computing for Data Intensive Applications

Cloud Computing is a new paradigm. In this talk, we will present several critical issues triggered by this new paradigm, particularly how to design and implement large data-intensive applications (including digital libraries) in the cloud computing environments. For example, do we need a structured methodology for design and implementation of large data intensive applications in the cloud environments? If so, what is such a methodology?

In addition, we will discuss the costs/performance tradeoff considerations of moving some of the modules of existing or future systems into the clouds. Furthermore, we will also discuss the issue of hiding the data format/medium revolution from the user for a long time (say, 1,000 years) in the cloud computing environments.

Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Peter Chen

Dr. Peter Chen received his PhD degree from Harvard and was on the faculty of MIT, UCLA, and Harvard. He has been Distinguished Chair Professor of Computer Science at Louisiana State University (LSU) and the Director of Special Project in LSU¡¯s National Center of Security Research and Training (NCSRT), a large organization with over 300 employees. Since 2004, he has been the Executive Director of the USA-China cooperation of the Universal Digital Library Project.

Dr. Chen is internationally known for his original work of the Entity-Relationship (ER) Model, one of the most widely used data models for database design and software engineering. His original ER model paper is one of the most cited papers in computer software and one of 38 most influential papers in Computer Science by a survey of 1,000 computer science professors and is included in the book, ¡°Great Papers in Computer Science¡±.

Dr. Chen received many prestigious awards including the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award, IEEE Harry Goode Award, Data Administration Management Association (DAMA) International Achievement Award, Stevens Award in Software Method Innovation, and Taiwan¡¯s high-tech award -- Pan Wen-Yuen Outstanding Research Award. He was recognized as one of the 16 software pioneers in the book entitled Software Pioneers (Springer, 2002). He is a Fellow of IEEE, ACM, and AAAS. He was a member of the U.S. NSF/CISE Advisory Committee and the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. He is listed in Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World.
