Keynote: Future Directions for the Universal Digital Library Project
The UDL project was started in 1995 with the goal of providing universal access to "all authored works to anyone anywhere in the world". The UDL was intended to be multimedia including Books, Music, Movies, Lectures, Monuments, and Paintings. With the signing of the Million Book Project MOU with China in 2002, scanning books has been the primary objective. Commercial activities, such as Google Books, have supplanted many of the original plans. However, over 90% of the original task remains to be done. This talk will review the unfinished agenda and present the plans for the future.
